10 Simple New Year Resolutions to Improve Your Lifestyle

“Your life does not get better by (3)A new year often calls for a set of new year resolutions. Personally, I’ve never been one to write down my resolutions in fear of not achieving them. But, I suppose, that’s the best way to achieve them. Nevertheless, I have compiled 10 simple new year resolutions that are require minimum effort but are likely to improve your lifestyle. Let me know in the comments of your new year resolutions or, if you don’t set resolutions, let me know why not.

  1. Get up before the rest of the world. Start gradually: 7am, 6am, 5am. They say it takes 30 days to establish a routine, so wake at 7am for 30 days, then 6am for another 30 days and, after that, wake at 5am for at least 30 days. You’ll have gained an extra few hours of the day, free to spend working, writing, drawing, grabbing a scarf and a coat and watching the sun rise.
  2. Stretch. Stretch upon waking, especially. Start by reaching up towards to ceiling, then down towards your toes. Stretch your fingers; stretch in awkward positions and comfortable positions; stretch.
  3. Fall asleep earlier. Start gradually: 11pm, 10pm, 9pm. You can use this sleep calculator to determine what time you need to fall asleep to wake up feeling refreshed and re-energised.
  4. Eat well. Strengthen your cooking skills and get into the habit of cooking yourself breakfast: pancakes with an array of toppings; fried tomatoes, mushrooms and bread; your favourite cooked breakfast.
  5. Stay hydrated. Try and drink a litre of water daily; buy a litre bottle, if needs be.
  6. Take longer showers and play your favourite music – loud. Use your favourite sets of shower gels and shampoos. When you get out of the shower, moisturise your body and brush your teeth.
  7. Keep a clean environment. Make your bed with more care, dedicate a day to specific household jobs. These tiny acts will take no longer than twenty minutes out of your day but the impact on your mindset could potentially be massive.
  8. Push yourself to spend time outside. Take your headphones; visit the beach; go for a walk; take a camera to capture early morning sunrise; smile at strangers; sit and watch the people pass you.
  9. Pay it forward. Random acts of kindness are what makes the world go round. Say good morning to the stranger on the stairs; donate food or clothes to a homeless person; let someone overtake you in a line; pay double for a parking ticket and leave the second in the machine for the next person; place bunches of flowers on the doorsteps of strangers, with notes saying “this is a random act of kindness, pay it forward”; offer your seat to someone when on crowded public transport.
  10. Save your money. Buy a tin and place every two pound coin and 50p coin you get in the tin. This is your saving tin. Alternatively, you could opt to save one pound coins, 10p coins or 20p coins. At the end of the year, count how much is in your saving tin.
